The Cautious Canine by Patricia B. McConnellMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
This is one of Patricia McConnell's "booklets" that focuses in on one issue or another. "The Cautious Canine" is a step by step dog training treatment plan for fearful dogs. Through several books as well as working with a professional trainer, we have concluded that Baylie has one of the sweetest personalities who wants very hard to please us, but she is just a fearful little dog. Add that to the "Terrier" in her and now we understand why she is snappy at times. She has the mindset, "I'm gonna get you before you get me!" We are working very hard and patiently to try and get her to overcome her behavioral problems that are triggered by her fears, which mainly includes meeting/seeing new dogs.
Here is an excerpt taken from Patricia McConnell's website describing her booklet.
"So many behavioral problems in dogs result from fear, but fear-based problems can become worse if treated incorrectly. This booklet provides a step-by-step dog training program of desensitizing and counter classical conditioning. It can help you solve minor dog problems and prevent serious ones, whether your dog's fears include the vacuum cleaner, people with hats, or the stranger at the door. Covered are the oh-so-important details related to identifying exactly what triggers your dog, creating a step-by-step treatment plan, monitoring your progress, and why you need to treat the fear and not just your dog's reaction to the fear. This book is on the "Top- Ten" of Dogwise's Dog Training Book Catalog, and has helped thousands of dogs and their owners around the country."
